How to grow a Pineapple flower in your room

July 14th, 2010

There are several types of pineapple. The edible species is called Pineapple comosus and also can be cultivated as an indoor flower.

Pineapple plant has expressive leaves and tiny flowers and in the spring it can even surprise you with the fruit. But for that certain conditions need to be met as follows:

* The temperature in the room where the plant is should be around 18-21C, although it can withstand warmer temperatures. But places that are exposed to drafts and cold air inflow should be avoided. Put your plant in bright spots because that way the patterns on the leaves will come up to highlight and give even greater beauty to your home. If you decide to keep the pineapple on your balcony make sure that it’s on the sunny side (the ideal dose is six hours per day of direct exposure to sunlight).

* Although the pineapple plant is easy to grow, there are still a few things that are important. It should be watered twice a week during the summer months and every 15 days you can put a little liquid fertilizer to the water that you use to water the plant. While the plant produces fruit you can do the same process once a week.

* Pineapple plant dies after flowering. Therefore it is best during cultivation period to cultivate small shoots that can be separated and grown separately. Besides this way of propagation of pineapple, there is another one. Cut off the upper part of the fruit 1-2 cm below the leaves, then clean the rest of the fruit and put it in the ground – a mixture of peat and sand. Let it takes root.

* If dry tops of leaves appear on your plant it needs to be splashed with lukewarm water and her ground watered. But if soil begins to rot in the place where it is connected to the plant it should be moved to the warmer place and dried because there is too much moisture and the plant begins to rot.
