Bromelain – pineapple miraculous enzyme
May 30th, 2010
What makes pineapple one of the best natural medicinal products is an extremely high proportion of bromelain. Bromelain is called the miraculous enzyme, consisting of precisely three enzymes that act on the degradation of proteins in the body, so we can say that pineapple is one of the most important allies in the digestion of proteins. Bromelain has some other positive traits: prevents blood clotting and thus improves circulation, lowers blood pressure and contributes to the degradation of deposits on the inner walls of the vessels, alleviates inflammations and relaxes the muscles preventing local muscle spasms (such as the menstrual cramps). Bromelain can be found in capsule form like a diet supplement.

Pineapple is a good assistant in preserving health, because with all of the above, it has diuretic characteristics, it’s used to stimulate appetite, improve digestion, prevent diarrhea, destroy intestinal parasites and helps with sunstroke. When it comes to skin hyperpigmentations caused by aging (old age spots) bromelain again act as our ally. Bromelain penetrates through the skin and can make old age spots to fade. We put a pad of cotton wool soaked in pineapple juice on top of the palms and spots fade or completely disappear. Pineapple juice was used at high temperatures and sea sickness symptoms. In the Caribbean countries pineapple is valued aphrodisiac.
Bromelain is great for easing arthritic pain. Specifically, pineapple encourages reducing of swellings and pain in arthritic joints, which results in better mobility of the body.
Bromelain is derived from pineapple stalks, and it limits the secretion of substances that cause hip swelling. This enzyme helps in the breakdown of fibrin, protein associated with fluid retention in the body.
Bromelain is less well known remedy for rhinitis and bronchitis as it reduces the density of mucus in the trachea. In doing so bromelain supports and promotes the effectiveness of antibiotics. Some studies suggest that with some inflammations bromelain could even be used instead of antibiotics.
While choosing pineapples, keep in mind that immature fruits of pineapple are quite sour and they contain extremely high amounts of acid, so people with inflammation of gastric mucosa, ulcers or duodenum should avoid pineapple. For such people it is advisable to avoid the less ripe sweet fruit. A large amount of acids present in immature fruit may damage the teeth. Pineapple and pineapple juice are not recommended during pregnancy.
